Harbor, Coastal and Offshore Engineering

Port, coastal and offshore engineering doctoral discipline was approved to be established in 1998. It relies on national key branch of learning and possesses mobile stations for post-doctoral research program of hydraulic engineering, key laboratory of ocean engineering in ShandongProvince. There are 17 professors (including 13 doctoral supervisors) and 9 associate professors in which there is one special professor of Cheung Kong Scholars Program, one Distinguished Young Scholar supported by National Natural Science Found of China and four scholars supported by the Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University. The major research directions of the subject are: the dynamic analysis, design and prevention technique research of ocean engineering structures, the research of interactions between the ocean environment and port and coastal engineering, the estuary and coastal dynamics theories and engineering application, utilization of marine renewable energy.

At the present there have been three international cooperation projects, two key projects of the
national natural science foundation, one 973 project, two 863 important projects, ten 863 national projects and ten national natural science foundations. There are more than 300 published papers including 100 papers indexed by SCI and EI, five monographs and textbooks, eleven invention patents, two second prizes of the national scientific and technological progress award as the first awardees and unit, one first prize of provincial natural science award, three first prizes of provincial science and technology progress award and one first prizes of provincial excellent teaching achievement.

It has close cooperation with international famous universities like University of Rhode Island, University of Delaware, University of Texas and A&M of United States, University of Hamburg of Germany and Kyoto university of Japan, developing cooperative subjects between professors and co-culture postgraduates project which provides lots of excellent persons for the development and construction of national port, coastal and offshore engineering.

Doctor graduates of the subject mainly work in high institutions, research units, Ministry of Communications, Ministry of Water Resources and Offshore Oil Corporations, engaged in research, teach, design, management and construction of coastal, port and waterway. Also some of them stay at aboard for farther research.

Hydrology and Water Resources

The subject of Hydrology and Water Resources concerns the circulation, distribution and movement laws of water, and basic theories, techniques and methods of development and utilization of water resources, hydraulic environment improvement and protection, hydraulic engineering operation and management and flood and drought disasters protection. It is a most important component of hydrology science with the content of both basic science and applied science. It plays an important role in the human practice of knowing nature, adapting to the nature and changing nature.

This subject was established by approval of the academic degree Committee of State Council in 2005, and recruited master graduates in 2006. It posses twenty teachers which includes 4 professors, 8 associate professors and 16 of them have doctor degrees. There is one river engineering laboratory, one engineering hydrodynamic laboratory which occupies 2000m
2 and Shandong Province Key Laboratory of Ocean Engineering. At the present five
national natural science foundations of China, two 863 national projects, near twenty research projects of government and comprise are carrying out. More than sixty published papers and four monographs or textbooks are published. Two provincial science and technology prizes were awarded. This subject is an important base for training high-level and versatile talents in hydrology and water resources field.

Hydraulics and river dynamics

Hydraulics and river dynamics is an applied basic subject in First Class Discipline of Hydraulic Engineering, its aim is to learn about and master the rule of water body movement, study the interaction between current and riverbed, coastal, constructions as well as sediment and other solid materials diffusion and transport in water, and serve for Water conservancy, civil engineering, traffic and environmental engineering as well as metallurgy and others industries.

Hydraulics and river dynamics is not only with a long history but also a discipline that develops at a high rate. Presently, it is going through a process of transformation from traditional to modern and from semi-experience and semi-theory to an applied basic subject that widely uses all kinds of numerical method and modern technique to solve engineering problems such as disastrous floods and erosion, shortage of water resources and worsening of water environment and so on. It had played an important role in hydraulic and hydropower, port and transport-engineering construction and daily life by combined with mathematics, mechanics and other basic theory.

Hydraulic Engineering

This specialty mainly researches the environmental dynamics dealt with river, estuary, coastal and offshore engineering and interaction between constructions and hydrodynamics, new-type construction, the newest constructional technique as well as engineering management, directly serve for importance projects dealt with the national economy and the people’s livelihood, such as harbor construction, disaster prevention & protection in coastal cities, offshore oil exploration, utilizing of renewable energy.

professional field was supported by State Key Subject of Harbor, Waterway and Offshore Engineering (cultivated status) and Shandong Province Key Lab of Ocean Engineering. Two international cooperation grants, two key projects and eight general ones of National Natural Science Fund, eight
National High Technology Research and Development Programs (863) as well as other research plans and projects are carried out and finished by faculty members in this research team.

Utilization Technology of Ocean Renewable Energy

Development of renewable energy must be enforced based on the circumstance of high growing ratio of energy demands and decreasing of fossil fuel. Ocean covers 71% area of the earth, which contains huge amount of energy. Utilization of ocean renewable energy is becoming one of the most important ways to pursue new energy for the coastal countries. Developing ocean renewable energy technologies has essential strategic meanings for energy supply structure innovation, economy promotion and national defense. Utilization technology of ocean renewable energy is to study the renewable energy in the ocean and converting to electricity and other feasible utilization and transferring mode for ocean renewable energy. It is about the reasonable development, high efficiency usage and storage for secondary utilization of ocean renewable energy. It relates to the ocean engineering, fluid mechanism, engineering mechanics, mechanical engineering, electricity engineering, control engineering and environmental science and technology. The main research subjects of this discipline is the development and utilization science and technology of ocean renewable energy such as wave energy and tidal stream energy.

Utilization technologies of ocean renewable energy discipline was approved to be established in 2013. It relies on primary discipline of hydraulic engineering , Qingdao Municipal Key Laboratory of Ocean Renewable Energy . There are 5 professors and 9 associate professors. There have been 5
national natural science foundation projects, 2 international cooperation projects, 1 key projects of 863 projects, three 863 national projects. There are more than 100 published papers including 50 papers indexed by SCI and EI. It has close cooperation with international famous universities like University of Edinburgh, University of Southampton of United Kingdom, Korean Maritime University and Korean Institute of Ocean Science and Technology, University of Tokyo and University of Kyoto university of Japan, developing cooperative subjects between professors and co-culture postgraduates project which provides lots of excellent persons for the development and construction of ocean renewable energy engineering.
