Notice of 2022 China-ASEAN International Forum on "Sustainable Development of Fisheries and Aquaculture Under the Blue Transformation Strategy"

I. Background and Purpose

The global production of fisheries and aquaculture reached a record high of 214 million tons in 2022, of which 122.9 million tons were from aquaculture. Asian countries are the major producers, accounting for 70% of the world's total production. China, the largest producer, accounts for 35% of the total, while ASEAN countries account for 21%. As agricultural production is under growing pressure, fisheries and aquaculture are playing increasingly important roles in ensuring food security and people’s nutrition and health. In June 2022, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) released the State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2022. The report puts forward for the first time a “Blue Transformation” strategy, which aims to promote high-quality development of fisheries, accelerate the industry’s transformation and upgrading, and enable the production of more aquatic products with better quality. China and ASEAN shoulder the important task of carrying out this “Blue Transformation”.

In response to the “Blue Transformation” strategy and China's “21st Century Maritime Silk Road” initiative, Ocean University of China will organize the 2022 China-ASEAN International Forum on “Sustainable Development of Fisheries and Aquaculture Under the Blue Transformation Strategy” in collaboration with relevant partners. The forum will host discussions about the implementation of the strategy, further expansion of the space for fisheries, and ways of improving the production capacity of aquatic products, with the purpose of facilitating the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
