On June 15, the general election of the United Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS) was held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Dr. Tang Yong, an alumnus of Ocean University of China (OUC), was re-elected as a member for a term from 2023 to 2028. He is a researcher at the Second Institute of Oceanography of the Ministry of Natural Resources of China.
CLCS, established under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, officially came into operation in 1997. Comprised of 21 independent experts, the commission has been performing its function of facilitating the implementation of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea in respect of the establishment of the outer limits of the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles from the baselines from which the breadth of the territorial sea is measured. There have been experts of Chinese nationality serving as members of the commission since its establishment.
From September 1993 to June 1997, Dr. Tang Yong studied marine geophysics at Qingdao Ocean University (a former name of OUC). From September 1997 to June 2000, he studied for his master’s degree in marine geology at OUC.
