Established in 1924, Ocean University of China (OUC) is located in the Olympic sailing city of Qingdao, a beautiful coastal city by the Yellow Sea. OUC, with its strengths in oceanography and fisheries, has developed itself into a key comprehensive university directly under the administration of the Chinese Ministry of Education. According to the ESI database, OUC has reached the top 1% of the most-cited universities and scientific institutions globally in nine research fields, namely earth science, plant and animal science, engineering, chemistry, materials science, agricultural science, biology and biochemistry, environment and ecology as well as pharmacology and toxicology. Oceanography and fisheries have ranked first nationally in all the first-level discipline evaluations. Now, OUC boasts four vessels for teaching and scientific investigation and has formed a comprehensive mobile marine laboratory system to conduct field observation covering nearshore and offshore areas, deep sea and polar regions. OUC initiated and coordinated the establishment of Qingdao National Laboratory for Marine Science and Technology (QNLM), China’s only marine-related laboratory at national level.
The developmental goal of OUC is to turn itself into a top-level research-oriented university with international recognition and distinct features by 2025. OUC will strive to become a world-class university with distinct characteristics by the middle of this century or even later.
Adhering to the strategy of “boosting the university with talents”, OUC aims to attract well-established academics and outstanding young professionals from home and abroad through “Zhufeng Outstanding Talent Program”, “Fanrong Outstanding Talent Program”, “Distinguished Professors Program”,“Outstanding Young Talent Program”, and “Green Card Talent Program”. On a regular basis, we also recruit teachers with senior professional titles and excellent young teachers. We are currently looking for exceptional professionals globally to fill the following positions.
Ⅰ.Positions and Requirements
1. Zhufeng Outstanding Talent Program
“Zhufeng (“Peak” in Chinese)Outstanding Talent Program” of Ocean University of China adopts a three-tier appointment system for the position of distinguished professor. The post will be filled on a full-time, five-year contract basis with the possibility of renewal. “Zhufeng Talent Program” aims to attract and retain:
(1) Leading researchers with profound academic attainments and international influence who have made significant systemic and creative contribution to the fields of science and technology or engineering. Applicants for the first-tier position should have the competence to apply to be academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences or Chinese Academy of Engineering and help his or her discipline to be in the lead in the international arena. The suggested upper limit for age is 55.
(2) Leading researchers, with profound academic attainments, wide recognition and innovative conception for team development and research, have the competence for internationally advanced research. Applicants for the second-tier positions are supposed to have published influential academic papers on world-renowned top journals of related discipline or commanded key engineering technology and made outstanding achievements widely recognized at home and abroad. The suggested upper limit for age is 50.
(3) Outstanding researchers with high-level academic attainments and active academic ideas. Applicants for the third-tier positions are expected to lead related subjects to closely track the level of domestically advanced science and play an important role in the development of discipline, subject and public platform. Applicants should have made remarkable academic achievements, or have developed key technology and won recognition both at home and abroad. The suggested upper limit for age is 45.
2. “Fanrong Outstanding Talent Program”
“Fanrong (“prosperity” in Chinese) Talent Program”, which is for scholars in liberal arts and social sciences, adopts a three-tier appointment system on a full-time, five-year contract basis with the possibility of renewal. “Fanrong Outstanding Talent Program” aims to attract and retain:
(1) Outstanding scholars who have been at the international forefront of academic research, with a distinguished record of academic achievements in philosophy and social sciences, foresight and strategic vision on the development of discipline as well as significant global influence. The suggested upper limit for age is 55.
(2) Outstanding scholars, with solid theoretical foundations and innovative ideas, and wide recognition at home and abroad, can help related subjects to be in the lead at home and produce international influence. The suggested upper limit for age is 50.
(3)Outstanding scholars with a successful track record in publishing influential papers on authoritative journals within certain disciplines or publishing academic monograph as the first author through prestigious publishing houses and creating research achievements recognized by experts at home and abroad in the same fields. Applicants should have the competence to deliver advanced research achievements nationally and play an important role in disciplinary development. The suggested upper limit for age is 45.
3.“Distinguished Professors Program”
“Distinguished Professors Program” of Ocean University of China adopts a two-tier appointment system on a full-time, four-year contract basis with the possibility of renewal. The program aims to attract and retain:
(1) Distinguished professors with profound academic attainments and global academic influence. Foreign applicants for the position are supposed to be professors and have taught undergraduate core courses for a long time. The suggested upper limit for age is 55.
(2) Distinguished professors with profound academic attainments. Foreign applicants for the position are supposed to be associate professors and have taught undergraduate core courses for a long time. The suggested upper limit for age is 50.
4. “Young Talent Program”
“Young Talent Program” of Ocean University of China adopts a three-tier appointment system. The post will be filled on a full-time, five-year contract basis with the possibility of renewal.
(1) Excellent young teachers at the forefront of academic research within the discipline and with academic achievements recognized by experts at home and abroad. Applicants for the positions should be able to lead related subjects to closely track the international level and ultimately surpass the advanced world level or leading domestic level. The suggested upper limit for age is 40.
(2)&(3):Excellent young teachers with great potential and achievements in a certain research discipline. The suggested upper limit for age is 35.
5. “Green Card Talent Program”
“Green Card Talent Program” of Ocean University of China adopts a two-tier appointment system on a part-time, three-year contract basis with the possibility of renewal and the actual time working at OUC should be no less than two months every year. Positions available under the program include guest professor, chair professor.
Applicants for guest professor are expected to be full professors for a lifetime in international prestigious teaching and research institutions and have huge global influence within certain discipline.
Applicants for chair professor are expected to possess a lifelong senior professional title in international prestigious teaching and research institutions and have important influence within certain discipline.
6. Professors and associate professors
OUC plans to recruit a certain number of full professors and associate professors. Foreign applicants for full professors should have been assistant professors or possess equivalent titles. The suggested upper limit for age is 50. Applicants under the age of 45 should have a doctoral degree. Applicants for associate professors should have doctoral degrees from well-known universities or research institutions and could carry out research independently. The suggested upper age limit of associate professor is 35.
7. Young teachers
OUC plans to attract a group of outstanding young teachers with good academic backgrounds and great potential. Applicants are supposed to graduate from high-level universities and scientific research institutions. The suggested upper limit for age of doctoral candidate is 30 in general and 35 for outstanding applicants while that of master candidate for badly needed programs is 27 and 30 for outstanding applicants. OUC will adopt two ways of management within two years of their employment: teaching-oriented postdoctorate and an appointment system.
