OUC students win iGEM Gold Award for the first time

OUC-China team won the gold award of the International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition on November 1, 2016 in Boston, United States. It was the first time for OUC to win the gold award  after taking part in it for 6 times. The team of 12 undergraduate students well demonstrated the style and strength of Ocean University of China.


Since taking part in iGEM in 2011, OUC team has improved itself step by step winning a number of awards like Asian Bronze, Asian Gold, Global Bronze and Global Silver, and Xiaoping Sci-Tech Innovation Team in 2014. Out of 300 teams in 2016 event, 40 were gold award winners headed by MIT, Oxford, Stanford, Peking University, Nanjing University and Shanghai Jiaotong University.


The 2016 OUC-China Team members were as follows: Jiang Yu, Fu Xiaoyi, Chen Ruimin, Fei Lijiang, Li Yifei, Ding Wenqun and Zheng Zheyu from the College of Marine Life, Ma Zhixin and Wang Yisi from the College of Food Science and Engineering, Chen Qian from the School of Mathematical Sciences and Yi Wei from the College of Engineering. Self-organized and self-managed, the team selected the project by itself, backed up by the OUC Innovation and Start-up Base, and the Research Innovation Laboratory of the National Demonstration Center for Experiment and Teaching at OUC College of Marine Life. 


OUC project for this year’s event was Cistrons Concerto, which brings stem-loop structure into polycistrons by synthetic biology to explore a new regulating mechanism after the transcription of prokaryotic gene expression, for the purpose of developing a new method of quantitative expression in certain proportion for target genes in escherichia coli. The world competition of genetic engineering witnessed the great effort of OUC students in learning and communicating with the students of the world top universities.
