President of Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers visits OUC



On October 17th, the 16-member delegation from Germany visited OUC headed by Prof.Otmar Wiestler,President of Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers, Prof.Martin Visbeck, team leader of Physical Oceanography, GEOMAR Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research Kiel, and Prof.Corinna Schrum, Director of Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht Center for Materials and Coastal Research (HZG). OUC President Yu Zhigang, Vice President Li Huajun met with the visitors at OUC Library of Laoshan Campus.


President Yu said that OUC attaches great importance to the relations with German universities and research institutions, the second biggest partner of OUC in international cooperation, achieving many cooperative projects in marine science and life science. OUC has established sustainable and stable ties with the leading geology institutions and universities of Germany. Successful is the joint education program of high-level personnel in marine science between two countries. Sino-German Center for Marine Science was established. Yu hoped that both parties could take this opportunity to further understand each other and explore new cooperation in marine drug, ocean energy and material science for better academic research and talent education. President Wiestler introduced in detail the development, research areas, scale, talent education and source of funds of Holmholtz Association and put forward the preliminary idea of setting up a joint graduate school with OUC and students’ management mode. Prof.Martin Visbeck introduced the researches at GEOMAR. Prof. Chen Xue’en introduced what has been achieved in the bilateral cooperation and talent education since the establishment of Sino-German Center for Marine Science. Both parties exchanged ideas on potential areas for cooperation and made preliminary discussion on possible cooperation in deep sea, coastal zone and ocean observation. 


Vice President Li Huajun stressed in the concluding remark that cooperation can be implemented in a number of ways like joint application of research projects, establishing joint labs together, joint education of innovative talents as well as interaction, exchange and cooperation between faculty and students of the two countries on regular basis.
