The 10th Sino-German Summer Workshop on Marine Sciences held in Bremen

The 10th Sino-German Summer Workshop on Marine Sciences, sponsored by Sino-German Center for Research Promotion, was held in Bremen on September 7, 2015. The theme of the 14-day workshop was “the Sustainable Development of Coastal Zone--Opportunity and Challenge”.

During the workshop, faculty members from China and Germany would give interdisciplinary academic lectures related to marine sciences, including sustainable development of marine resources, remote sensing technology (especially the application in coastal zone), protective measures of coastal zone, human impact on coastal zone system, climate and biological diversity, economic issues and environment management of the sustainable development of coastal zone. Meanwhile, student representatives from both countries would attend group discussion, make posters together, visit research institutions such as the Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT) and Center for Marine Environment Sciences (MARUM), and Bremen Port Klimahaus in order to understand the different landscapes in Africa, tropical rain forest and polar region. They will also attend the 5th Sino-German Seminar on Marine Sciences.

Participants in this summer workshop include 19 faculty and scientists as well as 21 student representatives from Ocean University of China, Zhejiang University, Shanghai Ocean University, Institute of Oceanology of CAS, Beihai branch of State Oceanic Administration, University of Bremen, Leibniz Center for marine tropical ecology, University of Kiel, Helmholtz Kiel Institute of Oceanography, Helmholtz Polar Ocean Research Center -Alfred Wegener Institute, remote sensing technology institute of Germany Space Agency, Leibniz Institute of Baltic (Warnemunde) and University of Bergen.

Sino-German Summer Workshop on Marine Sciences is an important activity included in the joint educational project of Sino-German Initiative on Marine Sciences: High Education. Since 2005, OUC has, in collaboration with University of Kiel, University of Bremen, Helmholtz Kiel Institute of Oceanography and ZMT, held 10 summer workshops with 204 scientists and 289 students from both countries as the participants.
