OUC Celebrates 90th Anniversary

Within ninety years of vicissitudes, Ocean University of China (OUC) has been committed to writing a brilliant chapter on its journey to facilitate China’s marine development. On October 25th, staff, faculty members, students along with alumni and guests from all walks of life gathered at OUC to celebrate her 90th anniversary.


The Private Qingdao University, which OUC originates from was established in 1924, was the first modern institution of higher learning in Shandong province established by the Chinese. Since then OUC went through several historical changes respectively as Private Qingdao University, National Qingdao University, National Shandong University and Shandong University. In 1959, it evolved into Shandong College of Oceanography. In October 1960, it was defined by the Central Government as one of the 13 national key comprehensive universities. In 1988, the name Ocean University of Qingdao was formed and inscribed by Mr. Deng Xiaoping, the late chairman of China. In October 2002, the present name, Ocean University of China, was given with the ratification of the State Ministry of Education.


As the only marine-featured university included in the list of “Project 985” (for China’s top 39 universities) and Project 211” (for China’s top 100 universities), OUC always upholds the principle of “imparting profound knowledge and training talented professionals to meet the needs of the country”. The university takes it as its unique mission to educate and nurture talented professionals who can play a leading role or key part in boosting China’s marine development.


Standing by the ocean and prospering thanks to the ocean, OUC is committed to supporting the country’s marine development in a comprehensive way, and by adopting a method of focusing its strength on marine science and technology while keeping an eye on a balanced development, blazing a new trail of scientific outlook on development and education of innovative professionals to serve the purpose of making China stronger by further developing the ocean, the university is marching forward on its way to a high-level research-led university with international visibility and prominent features.
