Seawater desalination and membrane separation technology

Introduction:

The research field of seawaterdesalination and membrane separation technology was mainly focused on somemembrane-based key generic technologies used for drinking water security, waterpollution control, and separation process strengthening in the field of energy, resources and environment. The main researches include: (1) Seawater desalination technology and process optimization;(2) Membrane-based water treatment technology; (3) Membrane preparation technology.

We endeavor to develop noveldesalination methods and membrane processes, give comprehensive understandingof the fundamental principles of physical and chemical reactions and masstransfer therein, and give substantial theoretical and technological support tothe broadeningapplication of seawater desalination and membrane separationtechnologies.

Research interests:

Focus 1: Seawater desalination and process optimization

Seawater andbrackish water desalination has become a hot area of research in the pastdecades because of the world water shortage crisis and the development ofmembrane technology. This research field is mainly focused on usingmembrane-based technology, such as ultrafiltration pretreatment technology, nanofiltrationsoftening technology, novel technology of reverse osmosis integrated membranedesalination technology, as well as desalination process integration andoptimization, etc., to reduce the product water cost in seawater and brackishwater desalination process, and also to resolve the membrane fouling andscaling problem therein.

Focus 2: Membrane-Based Water TreatmentTechnology

Membranetechnology is crucial for process strengthen, energy saving and emissionreduction in modern chemical engineering, pharmaceuticals, food, printing anddyeing, fermentation, civil and environmental engineering, etc. In thisresearch field, we focus on using membrane-based technologies includingultrafiltration, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis, electrodialysis, etc. for thetreatment of process water or wastewater, such as printing and dyeingwastewater, electroplating wastewater, fermented liquid, oilfield producedwater, and so on, for green revolution of conventional chemical production aswell as for the reduction of environmental pollution.

Focus 3: Membrane Preparation technology

Basic theory andpreparation techniques of Ultrafiltration, Nanofiltration, Forward osmosis,Electrodialysis membrane, etc., with novel properties such as anti-oxidation,anti-biotic and anti-fouling are extensively investigated.
