The Department of Chemical Engineering wasestablished in 2002, and it started to enroll undergraduates from 2003. Now wehave one undergraduate program – Chemical Engineering and Technology, onedoctoral program –Marine Chemistry Theory and Engineering Technology, and several postgraduateprograms, including Chemical Engineering, Chemical Technology, and BiochemicalEngineering. Currently we have 22 staffsin the Department, including 1 Academician ofthe Chinese Academy of Engineering, 6 full professors (including 2 professor ofengineering), 10 associate professors (including 2 senior engineers) and 6lecturers. We have 4 doctoral supervisors and 18 Master's tutors, and over 18academic staffs hold Ph.D. degrees. We currently have over 120 registered undergraduatestudents and 150 postgraduate students, among them 130 M.S.and 20 Ph. D.
We emphasizeon both theories and practice in the teachingand learning processes of our undergraduate students, and we take great effortsto encourage the innovation spirit and to train their independent ability inthese processes. Aiming to equip our undergraduate students with comprehensiveprofessional essentials and practical experience, we have built a UnitOperations Laboratory and a Chemical Engineering Laboratory, with totally over300 square meters area and sufficient professional experimental apparatus andequipment. We have also founded several practice bases with the cooperation ofSinopec Qilu Company, Qingdao Hygain Chemical (Group) Co., Ltd., Qingdao LidongChemical Co., Ltd., Qingdao Soda Ash Industrial Co., and so on. Over 300undergraduate students have been trained in these bases for MetalworkingPractice, Cognition Practice and Productive Practice,and gained abilities ofpractice and operation. Among the former graduates, over one third pursuefurther studies abroad or at domestic institutions, and the overall employmentrate exceeds 90%.
Apart from teaching, we devote ourselves tothe development of the technology of Chemical Engineering. We make greatefforts to carry out scientific research and promote local economic developmentoriented by the government demand. We also focus on the interdisciplinary fieldof chemical technology and marine technology relying on the Key Laboratory ofMarine Chemistry Theory and Technology (Ocean University of China), Qingdao KeyLaboratory of Marine Fine Chemicals, and Engineering Center of SeawaterMultipurpose Utilization, etc. We have several research groups in the fields ofseawater desalination, membrane separation and water treatment technology,process systems engineering, oil sand gas purification technology, corrosionelectrochemical engineering, and biochemical engineering, leaded by Prof.Congjie Gao (Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering), Prof. Yangdong Hu,Prof. Chunhu Li, and Prof. Jia Wang, respectively, and all these groups standat the forefront of their research fields.
In the last ten years, we have conducted andparticipated over 50 key projects and programs, including National High-techR&D Program of China (863 Program), National Program on Key Basic ResearchProject (973 Program), National Key Technology R&D Program, programs foundedby National Natural Science Foundation of China, as well as those founded byprovincial and ministerial research projects, and industrial projects.We havemade a series of important research results in the above fields and have transferreda number of high technologies to produce substantial benefits for economy andsocial communities.
