On October 4, the 20th Asian Games concluded with a closing ceremony at Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium in Japan. The Chinese sports delegation topped the Asian Games gold medal table for the 12th consecutive edition, winning 169 gold, 89 silver, and 83 bronze medals. Its gold-medal tally marked a record high for China at an overseas edition of the Games. Ocean University of China (OUC) athletes competed with determination and delivered excellent performances, winning five gold and four silver medals, fully showcasing the vigor and spirit of the OUC community.

In the modern pentathlon women’s team final, Team China successfully defended its title and secured the Chinese sports delegation’s first gold medal of the Games. Zhang Mingyu, an undergraduate in the Sports Training Program, and OUC alumna Meng Xin joined forces with their teammates to claim the team gold. Zhang Mingyu also won silver in the women’s individual event.
In the pool, Xu Fang, an undergraduate in the Sports Training Program, competed in several events. He helped China win gold in the men’s 4×100m medley relay, mixed 4×100m medley relay, and men’s 4×100m freestyle relay, while also taking silver in the men’s 100m and 200m butterfly events.
In archery, Li Mengqi, also an undergraduate in the Sports Training Program, teamed up with his teammate in the recurve mixed team event. At match point in the final, he delivered the decisive 10, helping China claim gold and secure two quota places for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Jiang Zhichao, another undergraduate in the Sports Training Program, won silver in the women’s discus throw.
These achievements testify to OUC’s commitment to fulfilling the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education and continuously deepening the integration of sports and education. They also demonstrate the Teaching Center of Fundamental Courses’ ongoing efforts to enhance its capacity for talent development and improve educational outcomes. Building on these achievements, the Center will remain committed to fostering students through sports and enhancing teaching through competition. It will transform stories of perseverance from the sporting arena into valuable educational resources, inspiring more students to pursue excellence in life and nurturing a new generation of capable young people with sound moral grounding, intellectual ability, physical vigor, aesthetic sensibility, and work skills who will fully develop socialism and carry forward the socialist cause. Looking ahead, OUC will continue to deepen the integration of sports and education and support its athletes as they strive for excellence at higher-level competitions and bring honor to the country, thereby making its contribution to China’s development as a leading sporting nation.
