On the afternoon of August 6, the Shandong Provincial Science and Technology Award Conference was held in Jinan to honor the recipients of the 2025 Shandong Provincial Science and Technology Awards. As the leading institution, Ocean University of China (OUC) received 9 provincial science and technology awards. Professor Cui Hongzhi, Dean of the School of Materials Science and Engineering, received the 2025 Highest Science and Technology Award of Shandong Province in 2025, becoming the fifth OUC scientist to receive this honor.

Professor Cui Hongzhi spoke on behalf of the recipients of the 2025 provincial science and technology awards. She called for concerted efforts to build an innovative R&D platform for key marine materials and pursue breakthroughs at the fundamental level in materials, equipment, processes, and algorithms. She also stressed the need to accelerate the entire process from materials R&D to engineering applications, enabling materials to be produced reliably, at scale and at low cost, and allowing more advanced materials bearing the hallmark of “Shandong Smart Manufacturing” to be deployed in the deep sea and safeguard the nation’s major strategic equipment.
Professor Jing Zhao of the Key Laboratory of Physical Oceanography, Ministry of Education, and Professor Liu Xiaolei of the College of Environmental Science and Engineering received the Shandong Provincial Youth Science and Technology Awards, becoming the third and fourth young scholars from the university to receive this honor. As the leading institution, OUC received three project awards of the first and second prizes in the Shandong Provincial Science and Technology Awards. First-prize recipients, Professors Nie Jie, Jia Yonggang, and Wang Shuqing, were invited to attend the conference in Jinan and take the stage to accept their awards, while other awardees attended the conference at the Qingdao sub-venue.

The team led by Professor Nie Jie of the Faculty of Information Science and Engineering developed three innovative technologies: a robust and reliable platform for multimodal data analysis, a stable and generalizable approach to cross-scale long-range forecasting, and a collaborative and dynamic computing engine for cross-model coupling. Together, these innovations created the first integrated intelligent technology framework and system for cross-scale multimodal spatiotemporal integrated analysis and prediction, helping deepen the convergence of artificial intelligence and ocean science. The achievement, “Research, Development, and Application of Key Technologies for the Intelligent Analysis and Prediction of Cross-Scale Multimodal Spatiotemporal Big Data,” received the first prize of the Provincial Technological Invention Award. The team led by Professor Jia Yonggang of the College of Environmental Science and Engineering developed a suite of technologies and equipment for fine-scale geohazard detection and long-term in situ observation in tidal-flat and shallow-sea environments. The team systematically elucidated the mechanisms underlying typical geohazards in the subaqueous Yellow River delta and established an integrated system for geohazard prevention and control in the region. These advances have promoted the coordinated development of efficient marine resource utilization and ecological and environmental protection in tidal-flat and shallow-sea areas. The achievement, “Key Technologies and Applications for Precision Geohazard Sensing in Tidal-Flat and Shallow-Sea Areas,” received the first prize of the Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award. The team led by Professor Wang Shuqing of the College of Engineering overcame three core technical challenges: the multiscale design and analysis of marine flexible pipes, multi-material co-extrusion manufacturing, and intelligent monitoring and assessment. The team developed a range of fiber-reinforced marine flexible pipes featuring ultra-deepwater capability, large diameters, and multiple applications. These products enabled the domestic production of marine composite flexible pipes and strengthened China’s capabilities in the design, analysis, and independent R&D of marine flexible pipes. The achievement, “Key Technologies and Applications for the Design, Manufacturing, and Safety Monitoring of Marine Composite Flexible Pipes,” received the first prize of the Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award.

The achievement “Exploration and Application of the Metabolic Potential of Marine Microbial Resources from Special Habitats,” led by Professor Li Dehai of the School of Medicine and Pharmacy, received the second prize of the Provincial Natural Science Award. An achievement led by Professor Lyu Yaohui of the Faculty of Information Science and Engineering received the second prize of the Provincial Technological Invention Award. The achievement “Key Technologies for Seepage Prevention and Control in Transport Infrastructure under Complex Geological Conditions,” led by Professor Liu Tao of the College of Environmental Science and Engineering, received the second prize of the Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award.
