On March 12, Clarivate released the latest ESI (Essential Science Indicators) data, covering the period from January 2015 to December 2025. Ocean University of China (OUC)’s Engineering entered the top 1‰ of the ESI global rankings for the first time, becoming the third discipline at OUC to rank among the top 1‰ worldwide. This reflects the continued improvement in OUC’s disciplinary strength and international academic influence.

As of now, three disciplines at OUC, namely Plant & Animal Science, Agricultural Sciences, and Engineering, ranked among the top 1‰ globally in ESI. In addition, 13 disciplines rank among the top 1% worldwide: Plant & Animal Science, Geosciences, Engineering, Chemistry, Biology & Biochemistry, Materials Science, Agricultural Sciences, Environment/Ecology, Pharmacology & Toxicology, Microbiology, Computer Science, Social Sciences, General, and Clinical Medicine.
The ESI is an important analytical tool introduced by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) in 2011. Based on data from the Web of Science database, it is widely used to measure research performance and track trends in scientific development. ESI has become one of the world’s important reference tools for evaluating the academic strength and influence of higher education institutions and disciplines. Disciplines ranked among the top 1‰ are generally regarded as having reached a high international level.
