The 2025 International Conference on Marine Bio-organism and Health Industry was held in Qingdao from August 25 to 26. The conference was hosted by the State Key Laboratory of Marine Food Processing & Safety Control (the Laboratory), co-hosted by the Ocean University of China, Dalian Polytechnic University, and Qingdao Bright Moon Seaweed Group. President Zhang Junfeng addressed the opening ceremony.

President Zhang extended a welcome to the leaders and experts attending the conference. He introduced the historical contributions that OUC had made over the century, ever since the founding of the university. He pointed out that the food science discipline, as a representative example of how OUC continues to promote technological innovation, talent cultivation, and organically combine them with and positively interact with the industry’s development, has played a significant role in the planning and implementation of the country’s key project “blue granary”. The Laboratories that OUC participated in the construction of have made key breakthroughs in technologies, including bioprocessing, low-carbon processing, cell-cultured meat, and intelligent manufacturing, contributing largely to the marine food industry. He emphasized that the OUC should make sufficient benefits from its comprehensive advantages in ocean-related disciplines, continue to fully support and safeguard the laboratories’ construction and operation, promote more original and groundbreaking results, and activate and drive the development of the whole industrial chain.

Academician Zhu Beiwei stated in her speech that the development of marine bio-organism and the health industry is not only a strategic support for building China into a strong maritime country, but also a key to cultivating new quality productive forces. She hoped the attending experts to engage in in-depth exchanges on frontier issues worldwide in the fields of marine bio-organism and health industry, reaching new scientific research collaboration to serve the industrial upgrades of marine food, forming more industrialized application projects, further promoting the high-quality development in marine bio-organisms and health industry.

Academician Xue Changhu pointed out that, as the global population reaches over 8 billion, traditional agriculture faces challenges in restricted land and water resources; it has become a necessary choice to ask the ocean for food, nutrition, and health. OUC College of Food Science and Engineering, as well as Qingdao Institute of Marine Bioresources for Nutrition & Health Innovation, has long been serving to meet the significant demands for safeguarding national food security and promoting people’s health, facing the main battlefield of marine economy, devoting in theoretical and technological innovations of marine aquatic product processing, promoting to utilize low-value bulk fishery products in a way that maximizes its value, and leading the industrial upgrade of marine food in China. He hoped that, taking the conference as an opportunity, all the representatives could work side-by-side to achieve a brighter future for the marine economy with high-quality development.

Chairman Zhang Guofang introduced the history of Bright Moon Seaweed Group. The Group focuses on the in-depth development and diversified application of bioactive seaweed substances. Based on the Laboratory’s innovations, it has achieved a complete industrial close loop from resource development, bio extraction to end consumption. The Bright Moon Seaweed Group will continue to support the Laboratory, join forces with all representatives participating in the conference, to promote the continuous high-quality development of the marine bio-organism industry.

Academician Zhu Beiwei announced the selected list of 2025 State Key Laboratory Open Fund Programs. Academician Shan Yang, Academician Xue Changhu, Professor You-Jin Jeon from Jeju National University, Professor Kazuo Miyashita from Hokkaido University, and Professor Tan Mingqian from Dalian Polytechnic University made keynote speeches.
The Conference includes three sub-sessions focusing on Marine Food Nutrition and Quality Security, Marine Food New Resources and Technologies, and Marine Biomaterials and Medicine, as well as the Young Scholars’ Forum. Attended scholars made 53 special reports in total.
200 representatives attended the conference. They come from over 60 famous universities, research institutes, government departments, and leading enterprises in the industry, including Jeju National University, Kyung Hee University, Hokkaido University, Prince of Songkla University, Ocean University of China, Dalian Polytechnic University, Hunan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Zhejiang University, Jilin University, etc.
