From September 23 to 25, Wang Houjie, Vice President of Ocean University of China (OUC), led a delegation to Indonesia to attend the 2025 Pan-CLIVAR Meeting and a series of related workshops co-organized by OUC. CLIVAR (Climate and Ocean: Variability, Predictability and Change) is a major international program in climate and ocean science. The decadal event brought together nearly 200 experts and scholars from more than 30 countries to discuss scientific and societal issues related to climate change and its impact on Southeast Asia and beyond.

At the opening ceremony on the morning of September 23, Wang Houjie delivered a speech on behalf of OUC, extending congratulations on the 30th anniversary of the CLIVAR program and presenting the university’s innovative practices in ocean and climate research. He noted that as one of the six core projects of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), CLIVAR established its international project office at OUC in 2023, which has since become an important platform for international academic exchange and collaborative research in the field. OUC and Laoshan Laboratory have jointly promoted the coordinated innovation and shared development of CLIVAR’s global research network, achieving substantial progress. Looking ahead, Wang emphasized that OUC will continue to fully support the operation of the International CLIVAR Project Office (ICPO), further strengthen international cooperation in climate change research and talent development, and work together to address global challenges and advance ocean sustainability.
From September 23 to 25, the delegation participated in a series of workshops, engaging in in-depth exchanges with international experts on topics including atmospheric processes and climate dynamics, ocean climate observation and modeling, and biogeochemical processes and climate interactions. During the meeting, the delegation met with Dr. Cristiana Stan, Vice-Chair of the WCRP Joint Scientific Committee, and Dr. Hindumathi Palanisamy, Scientific Officer of WCRP. The two sides held productive discussions on the operation and future development of the ICPO, as well as broader cooperation between OUC and WCRP. They reached consensus on strengthening collaboration in data sharing, joint research, and international talent cultivation.

On the afternoon of September 25, OUC hosted a side event themed “Enhancing International Ocean-Climate Research Collaboration in a Changing Climate”. In his remarks, Wang Houjie emphasized that in the face of intensifying global challenges, the international scientific community must build a more open and collaborative research ecosystem. He reaffirmed OUC’s commitment to serving as a platform and hub for such cooperation, providing strong institutional support. Professor Lin Xiaopei, Dean of the OUC’s College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences, delivered a keynote report presenting the university’s latest research achievements on the strongest ocean currents in the western Pacific.
