New Vision, New Path, and New Chapter for China-Russia Arctic Cooperation: The 11th China-Russia Arctic Forum held at OUC

The 11th China-Russia Arctic Forum, co-hosted by Ocean University of China (OUC) and St. Petersburg State University, and co-sponsored by South China Business College of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, was successfully concluded. With the theme of Sino-Russian Arctic Cooperation: New Vision and New Path, the Forum focused on the most important topics of the Arctic.



In his opening remarks, Prof. Liu Yong, Vice President of OUC pointed out that as one of the pioneers of polar research in China, OUC has the country’s largest Arctic research team. The China-Russia Arctic Forum, which is the only platform for regular exchanges between Chinese and Russian academia, has been expanding its influence. He hoped that the forum could further promote academic exchanges and cooperation between the two countries in the Arctic field. Prof. Gu Yeli, Supervisor of South China Business College of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, expected the forum to play a greater role in promoting China-Russia Arctic cooperation in the post-pandemic era. Prof. Sergei Andriushin, Vice-Rector of St. Petersburg State University, hoped that the forum would deepen the exchanges and cooperation between the two universities and promote the development of Arctic research.


The forum discussed cooperation in four areas including Arctic scientific expedition, Arctic energy, Arctic environmental protection, and Arctic research and education. More than 40 experts from China and Russia presented their latest achievements and future directions of research online. All participants agreed that the China-Russia Arctic Forum will continue to serve as a basis to strengthen academic cooperation and student exchanges between the universities and research institutions of the two countries. 


The China-Russia Arctic Forum, jointly initiated by OUC and St. Petersburg University in 2012, has been successfully held eleven times. Arctic scholars of the two countries strive to make the forum an important platform for academic exchanges and educational cooperation that contributes to the substantive cooperation between China and Russia.
