Prof. Kirk R. Smith, Member of the United States National Academy of Sciences, Visits OUC


On November 6, 2019, Prof. Kirk R. Smith from the University of California, Berkeley and member of the US National Academy of Sciences, visited Ocean University of China (OUC). President Yu Zhigang received the guest. 


President Yu Zhigang briefly introduced the distinctive features and strengths of OUC. He said that in recent years, the university’s research in environmental and atmospheric sciences has been continuously strengthened, with fruitful results in international cooperation and academic innovation. As a world-renowned expert of environmental health, Prof. Smith has a huge impact both in the US and in the world. It was hoped that Prof. Smith could work with OUC and help with the university’s research and talent cultivation.


Prof. Smith spoke highly of OUC’s achievements. Committed to the research of air pollution-induced health impacts, Prof. Smith focuses on the relationships between environmental quality, health, resource utilization, development and policy in developing countries. He also expressed his hope to strengthen cooperation with OUC to jointly contribute to global environmental protection and people’s health.


In the morning of June 6, Prof. Smith delivered a report entitled Air Pollution: A Modern and Traditional Source of Ill-Health on Laoshan Campus.
