OUC Alumnus Liu Wei Wins 2019 Sloan Research Fellowship

On February 19, 2019, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation announced the winners list of 2019 Sloan Research Fellowships with 126 young scientists on it. Liu Wei, an alumnus of Ocean University of China (OUC), is one of the eight fellowship recipients in ocean sciences.

The Sloan Research Fellowships are known as a positive sign for Nobel Prize. This is the second year in a row for OUC alumni to be granted this fellowship. In 2018, Liang Xin, an assistant professor at the University of South Florida, received the fellowship, the first among OUC’s alumni. These honors demonstrate the progress OUC has made in talent cultivation in marine and atmospheric sciences.

After earning his bachelor’s degree in atmospheric sciences from OUC in 2002, Liu Wei continued his postgraduate study at OUC, where he received his master’s degree in meteorology in 2005 under the supervision of Prof. Liu Qinyu. Then he went to the University of Wisconsin, Madison for a Ph.D degree in atmospheric and oceanic sciences, and conducted postdoctoral research at National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, North Carolina State University, the Scripps Research Institute in the University of California, San Diego and Yale University. He is now an associate professor of geosciences at the University of California, Riverside.

The Sloan Research Fellowships are awarded annually by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation since 1955 to provide support and recognition to early-career scientists and scholars in US or Canadian universities or research institutes. The recipients are from eight fields including chemistry, computational and evolutionary molecular biology, computer science, economics, mathematics, neuroscience, ocean sciences and physics.
