Vice President Li Huajun visits universities in Canada, United States and Japan

To better explore cooperation in more areas, OUC Vice President Li Huajun made a series of visits during July 12-20, 2016 to University of Quebec in Canada, University of Maine and University of Rhode Island in the United States, as well as Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology in Japan at their invitations.


In Rimouski Campus of University of Quebec, Li had meetings respectively with President Jean-Pierre Quellet of University of Quebec, and Ariane Plourde, Director of Rimouski Institution of Marine Science. Both parties reached consensus on students exchange, research cooperation and mutual visits of faculty in the future on the basis of successful cooperation in the past. Accompanying Vice President Li were Prof.Yu Guangli, Dean of OUC School of Medicine and Pharmacy and Associate Professor Cai Chao.  


On the 12th, Director Ariane Plourde of Rimouski Institution of Marine Science introduced in detail the research results of Rimouski in marine science, team building and education of students. Li Huajun also detailed OUC disciplines, research platforms, as well as admission and education of students. Both parties expressed wishes for long-term and extensive cooperation. OUC delegation visited Rimouski Research Center for Marine Biological Technology, Ocean Fishing Center and Research Center for Marine Environment. Li Huajun and UQ President Jean-Pierre Quellet signed the cooperation agreement on education program of dual-degree master candidates in the field of marine science.

On 13th, for better understanding and cooperation, UQ professors gave creditable reports about their research focuses, chaired by Director Ariane Plourde. Discussions were made about how to boost academic exchange on certain targets and how to facilitate project application. Present at the meeting was Francois Dansereau from Quebec Provincial Department of Science and Technology who shared the information about the joint fund between Quebec and Chinese Government as well as Quebec and Shandong Province. The two parties reached consensus on details of students exchange programs in marine science, establishment of joint labs and application of joint funds. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed on cooperative research in developing marine drugs between UQ President Jean-Pierre qjellet and Yu Guangli, Dean of OUC School of Medicine and Pharmacy.


On 14th-15th, Li Huajun visited University of Maine and met with Carol Kim, Vice President in charge of research, and some professors from the College of Marine Science. The two parties reached consensus on students exchange, research cooperation and mutual visits of faculty members in the future. Also discussed was the operation mode and cooperation plan in the future about International Alliance of Marine-related Institutions.

Li Huajun visited University of Maine Ocean Observation System (UMOOS), accompanied by the leader of UM College of Marine Science. At the meeting with OUC alumni working and studying at UM, Li make a speech about OUC plan of recruitment, encouraging the alumni to work at OUC or cooperate with the alma mater in appropriate way. Li also had a meeting on the afternoon of 15th with Prof.James Hu, representative of the faculty of the Department of Ocean Engineering, University of Rhode Island, and signed the agreement on joint education of PhD candidates and cooperative research on ocean engineering.


During 17-19th, Li Huajun made an official visit to Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, one of the founders of IAMRI. Since friendly ties were established in 2004, mutual exchanges of faculty and students remain frequent especially in the fields of aquaculture and marine life science. TUMST Vice President Tadashi Tokai met with the OUC delegation.

Deep and frank discussions were made about how to operate IAMRI in the future and expanding the cooperative areas to more marine-related disciplines offered by both universities, in addition to the existing aquaculture and marine life science.
