The 3rd OUC-UEA Scientific Symposium Held at OUC


Ocean University of China (OUC) hosted the 3rd OUC-UEA Symposium on Marine Biogeochemical Processes and Air-Sea Interaction at Laoshan Campus from Dec. 2 to Dec.3, 2015. 


Vice President Li Huajun of OUC and Prof. Philip Gilmartin, executive dean of Faculty of Science at University of East Anglia (UEA), attended the opening ceremony and each delivered a speech.


In his speech,Vice President Li said the two universities have established close cooperative relations in recent years, adding thatthe year of 2015 is not only the golden year for a closer bilateral relationship between Chinaand the United Kingdom, but also the year for strengthening the collaboration between OUC and UEA. “We will further deepen and expand our cooperation in the future,” he said. 

Prof. Philip Gilmartin thanked OUC for inviting him to the symposium, which he hopes to bring more opportunities to scientists and faculty membersof both sides to work together more closely for cooperation in education and research.



A total of 19 representatives from OUC, UEA, Centre for Environment,Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS), Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute under Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, Yantai Institute of Coastal Zone Research under Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the First Institute of Oceanography under State Oceanic Administration participated in the symposium and each one of them gave a presentation. They had lively discussions and interactions during the symposium with the faculty members and studentsof OUC.


In the morning on December 3, the two sides had a discussion on the cooperation in research, joint education of masters and doctoral programs as well as 2+2 undergraduate joint programs. Constructive suggestions were put forward based on the current collaboration, and both sides showed their willingness to further expand and promote the cooperation. 


In the afternoon the participants visited the labs of College of Marine Geosciences, College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences and College of Engineering. Scientists in similar research fields reached initial agreement on further cooperation.


The 4th OUC-UEA Symposium is expected to be held by UEA in Norwich, England in 2016.
