Grants Given to Korean Studies at OUC

The project named “Academic System Building for Korean Studies in China from the Perspective of East Asian Cross-culture” which was submitted by the Center for Korean Studies at Ocean University of China (OUC) has successfully obtained the funding for the second-stage from the Strategic Research in Korean Studies (SIKS) under the South Korean Ministry of Education.

Associate Professor Li Haiying is in charge of the project which has been granted a total funding of 750 million Korean Won (4-4.5 million RMB). This research program which will last for five years is aimed to carry out in-depth studies of the scope and content of Korean Studies through cross-cultural communication in East Asia, so as to develop a sound system for understanding academic theories in Korean Studies.

The Center for Korean Studies received its funding for the first phase of RMB 2.098 million yuan back in 2009, achieving excellent results in all of its annual assessments. With the phase-1 funding granted, OUC has seen further enhancement in its capability to carry out research in Korean Studies, while maintaining the reputation in this field. In addition, fruitful achievements have been made through the project, including the publishing of 12 collections of books in Korean Studies, and the hosting of exchange activities and seminars with international partners.

Competition was fierce for the second-phase funding with over 20 institutions from all over the world participating, including the University of Cambridge. As the only institution of higher learning in China that has been granted the funding, the successful approval of the project boasts great significance in boosting the university’s development in Korean Studies.
