Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Glycoscience & Glycotechnology (Ocean University of China)

Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Glycoscience & Glycotechnology was approved as a key laboratory at provincial level by Shandong Province in 2006. The laboratorywas rated outstanding by the provincialcommittee in 2010. The laboratory was evolved from the Marine Drug Laboratory of Fisheries Department,Shandong College of Oceanography in 1980. It is located in the beautiful Yushan campus of Ocean University of China. The laboratory is the only one National Research Center for Marine Pharmaceutical Engineering Technology in China.

The laboratory is led by academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Professor Huashi Guan, as the director. It has 60 full-time faculty and staff members including one Chinese Academician, one Green Card Talent, one Taishan Scholar, five New Century Excellent Talents, twenty professors and twelve associate professors. The laboratory has 1 post-doctoral training station, 2 Ph.D programs and 3 master graduate programs. We haveover 200 graduate students, 89 Ph.Dstudents and 5 postdoctoral fellowsinourlaboratory.

The laboratory focuses onsolving critical scientific andtechnological issues related to marinedrug R&D aimed at preventing and treating majordiseases, such as cancers, cardio-cerebrovascular diseases, mental illnesses and virus infections.Current focuses includeglycopharmacology, glycochemistry and glycobiology. The laboratoryhas been ranked at the top in China for its marine drug discovery and development activities. The first modern marine drug, Polyalginate Sodium Sulfate(PSS), was developed by the laboratory in 1985. From then on, a series of marine drugs such as a cholesterol reducing drug (Mannose ester) and a anti-cancer marine drug (Hailite) developed by the laboratory came into the market. Now, four national primary new drugs are in different stages of clinical trials. Of these, an anti-Alzheimer's disease drug candidate (971) has transferred to the Sinova Specialties Inc. with the transfer fee of $81.0 million, which representedthe first marine drug candidate transferred to aforeign drug companywith the highest transfer fee in China ever before. There are also three marine drug candidates in pre-clinic studies: the anti-Type II diabetes drug HS203, anti-tumor drugs ACT-007 and MDS-10.

Over the years, the Laboratory has trained a group of high-level pharmaceutical professionals and has undertaken many national key projects. Faculties in the laboratory have won many national and provincial awards, such as the first prize of the State Science and Technology Awards, the first prize of the Technology Progress Award of the Ministry of Education and second prize of Innovation Award of oceanic administration. The Laboratory has compiled and published anencyclopedia that records the 3,600-yearhistorical development of Chinese marinedrugs, Chinese Marine Materia Medica (CMMM). This encyclopedia integrates classical theories withmodern science and technology. Thisencyclopedia also represents a milestone inthe scientific development of marine drugs, and is the amalgamation of the Easternand Western ways of thinking. The Laboratory has made remarkable contribution to the national pharmaceutical development and becomes one of the most important marine pharmaceutical research centerin the country.

The laboratory also makes great effort to collaborate with international scientific communities and industries.Close collaborativerelationships have been established with the Institute of Chinese Materia Medica, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica (SIMM), Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, the Kunming Institute of Botany of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (KIB/CAS), Academy of Military Medical Sciences, University of Georgia of the U.S.A., Imperial College London, University of Rotterdam of the Netherlands, Tokyo University of Japan, et. al.
