On October 13, 2017, the 15th Annual Conference of the China Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, sponsored by the Chinese Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics and Ocean University of China, was held at the Huanghai Hotel in Qingdao.

More than 10 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences attended the conference, including Guo Lei, Lin Qun, Ma Zhiming, Mu Mu and Li Anmin. Qingdao Municipal Consultative Conference, Vice President of Ocean University of China, Co-Chairman of the Conference, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Wu Lixin and international scholars from Europe, Japan and South Korea, as well as representatives of industrial and applied mathematicians, young scholars and students from other countries, attended the Conference, with the largest number of delegates.

At the opening ceremony, Academician Zhang Pingwen presented the work report on behalf of the Council. He pointed out that in recent years, the Academy has made remarkable achievements in promoting the institutionalization and openness of its work, and its international influence has been continuously enhanced. Academician Zhang Pingwen pointed out that now is the best time for the development of applied mathematics. Innovation-driven development provides a good opportunity for the development of the Institute of Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

The theme of this conference is "Challenges and Opportunities of Big Data to Industrial and Applied Mathematics". The purpose of the conference is to exchange the latest research progress of Applied Mathematics and its application results in industry, and to carry out extensive academic exchanges and discussions on the urgent problems and difficulties in industry.

The conference lasted for three days and organized 16 thematic seminars, including the Ocean Big Data Forum, the Financial Big Data Forum, the Student Forum, the Women's Academic Forum and the Embedded Conference jointly attended by Chinese, Japanese and Korean scholars. The conference's academic report covers the latest research directions of Applied Mathematics in many fields, including its applications in physics, chemistry, biology, economy, environment, finance, materials, medicine, information and so on. It fully illustrates the indispensable position of mathematics in the development of modern science and technology and its significance as a basic discipline.

The conference was held in Qingdao and hosted by Ocean UniversityofChina. It fully reflects the importance of national scientific and technological experts to Qingdao's scientific and technological work and industrial development, and reflects the important position of Ocean University of China in the national double-class construction.

The successful holding of the conference is bound to promote the development and application of science and technology in Qingdao and have a positive and far-reaching impact on the development of professional disciplines in Ocean University of China.
