Pure mathematics is the core of mathematics. It has many branches, such as mathematical logic, number theory, algebra, geometry, topology, theory of functions, functional analysis, differential equations and etc. With the development of modern mathematics, the growing interaction of these different branches generates many new research directions.

One of the main tasks of pure mathematics is to provide languages, concepts and tools for other scientific branches. Currently, the mathematical techniques generated by the interface between mathematics and computer science have become the central part of high and new technology. Pure mathematics is also a kind of culture. It plays a crucial role in graduate students’ psychological development and personality improvement. The study of pure mathematics would make an invaluable contribution to the creativity, ratiocination, analyzing and decision making ability.

The master program for pure mathematics was set up in 2006. Our research staffs form several research groups in topology, theory of functions and functional analysis. These groups have achieved great academic success in their respective research areas in recent years, and gained sponsorships from the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Natural Science Foundation of Shandong Province many times.Besides, the advanced library facility provides students new and complete research journals and professional monographs, which will be very helpful for students'development.
