Computational mathematics, which is an inter-discipline of mathematics and applications of computer sciences, concerns providing highly efficient numerical methods as welll assoftwares for computation emerged from sciences and engineering. There are two interdependent aspects for computational mathematics. One is computation in mathematics, which focuses on developing numerical methods suitable to run on computers for various mathematical models. The other is mathematics of computation, which focuses on the theory of analysis on the influences of roundoff errors.
Computational mathematics is now an important secondary discipline of mathematics including sub-disciplines such as numerical algebra, numerical approximation, numerical methods for differential equations, numerical optimization, computational geometry, data processing and statistical computation.
Our master program for computational mathematics was established in 1998. The main research fields include numerical algebra, numerical methods for partial differential equations, mathematical modeling and computation of oceanic problems and intelligence computation. One distinguished aspect of our research is the combination of the sciences and technology of mathematics with oceanography. We have achieved featured accomplishments in these fields and received quite a lot sponsorships from the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Natural Science Foundation of Shandong Province.
