About the Library

The library of Ocean University of China (OUC) is located in two separate campuses, namely, Yushan and Laoshan, with a total floor space of 52,000 square meters and over 3000 and 400 seats in the Reading Sections and the E-reading Section, respectively. A three-in-one mechanism (namely, experts’ selections, readers’ recommendations, and librarian’s construction all rolled into one) was established in the collection of books and document resources. Thanks to the collective wisdom of experts, readers, and the librarians, this mechanism enables the collections of the library to be more suitable for research and teaching, and it suits the readers’ needs as well, with greater effectiveness. By the end of 2011, the library houses approximately 1.9 million paper books and documents, 1.1 million eBooks, over 30,000 periodicals in Chinese or foreign languages, and 111 electronic databases in Chinese or foreign languages. While ensuring its continuity and a wide coverage of resources, the OUC library is now striving to meet the demands of key subjects and strong research areas, making its characteristics even more distinctive. The library set up the “Ocean Collections” in 2004, based on existing collections with distinctive features in such areas as oceanography and fisheries. To date, over 60,000 paper books are available to all readers.

The Library of OUC, consistently upholding the service code of “All for Readers,” dedicates itself to providing pleasant and convenient services. The facilities of the two campuses adopt the “One-Door” service, allowing users to borrow and return books in either of the libraries, which are open 98 hours per week, with electronic materials available to users 24/7. The reading section integrates services of book collections, venues for reading, data consultation, and inquiry handling. In addition, readers can enjoy such seamless and secure services online as data retrieval, book renewal, book-purchase recommendations, and Video-On-Demand. The E-reading Section is open to readers 14 hours a day for free. The capability and quality of such services as reservation and commissioned borrowing, online inquiry, user instructions, literature retrieval, inter-library loan, and literature exchange continue to improve, and the development of the E-library makes strides as well. The library houses a Sci-tech Novelty Retrieval Workstation of the Ministry of Educationwhich provides services to institutions of higher-learning, as well as research institutions. Currently, the service mode of the library of OUC has been transformed from the traditional “sole service of book borrowing and reading” into the “comprehensive digital service."

The 21st century is an ocean-focused century. The developmental goal of OUC is to become a world class, high-level research university with distinct characteristics by 2025, about a hundred years after its establishment; and to strive to rank among the best universities in the world with unique features of its own by the middle of this century. Correspondingly, the goal of the library is to become a modern library that is unique, open, and civilized with rich collections of reading materials.
