The specialty is an earliest established marine geophysical discipline base to train specialized experts with the theoretical and applied research focusing on aspects of the Earth and the geophysical signal acquisition and information processing. The specialty requires a solid Mathematics, Physics and Foreign Language, to master the basic theory, knowledge and Technology of Computer Application, Modern Geophysical Exploration, Information Processing, Continental and Oceanic Exploration and Evaluation, Disaster Prediction and Prevention of Urban Environment, Marine Resources Development, Evaluation and Management of the Earth. The graduates require engaging in geological and geophysical investigation, research, development and management, or IT and other related fields.

The specialty offers some main courses, including Calculation Methods, Signal Analysis, Elastic Wave Dynamics, Computer Programming Language, Geophysical Techniques, Digital Processing Method, Engineering and Development of Information Software Systems.

The main destination of graduates covers the State Oceanic Administration, the Ministry of Land, construction, planning, and other units such as oil exploration, design and engineering research institutions and universities. They can engage in the development, management, and other aspects of teaching and research. The department offers Marine Geophysics for Ph. D students, and Mineral Prospecting and Exploration, Earth Exploration and Information Technology and Engineering Geology for postgraduates. The Earth Exploration and Information Technology Disciplines is " Eleventh Five-Year " provincial key construction disciplines, Shandong Province.
