Marine Geology

The specialty is to train experts of marine geology and to establish a teaching and research base as the earliest established in China. Students are required to have a solid and synthetic training in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Foreign Language, Computer Science, and the ability of studying and good qualified personality, to master the basic theories of modern geology, expertised knowledge and research methods. The students should have an ability to find out the problem, to analyze the problem, to have ability to use the integrated knowledge for solving these problems and ability to use modern technology to engage in scientific practices.

The specialty focuses on training students to master basic theoretical knowledge of Marine Geology, Investigation Technology and research methods and to understand the research status and development direction of modern marine geosciences. Graduates can engage in scientific research, high-level education, science and technology development and administration in marine geology, resource investigation, marine engineering, continental and marine environmental protection, urban planning and construction, and transportation.

The main courses include basic theory courses in the fields of Geology (Mineralogy, Petrology, Structural Geology, Paleontology and Stratigraphy, etc.), Oceanography, Marine Geology, Marine Survey Techniques and Methods, Remote Sensing, Geographic Information Systems, Marine Engineering, Introduction to Environmental Science. In higher grades, training depends on different professional directions with different categories for selective courses.

The main departments and units for graduates are related to marine geology, marine management, and petroleum, coal, ports, construction, transportation, mapping, environmental protection, scientific research, education, development and management. This specialty has Ph. D student programs of Marine Geology and Marine Geochemistry, and postgraduate programs of Marine Geology and Marine Geochemistry, one first-class discipline of Geology (including Mineralogy, Petrology, Economic Geology, Geochemistry, Paleontology and Stratigraphy, Structural Geology and Quaternary Geology), and one post-doctor program of Marine Geology. The department has one national key discipline and one Shandong Provincial discipline.
