Institute of Geology and Geophysics, founded in 1990 and established by Academcian Shizhe Xu, is mainly engaged in Marine Geological and Geophysical Exploration, geophysical software development and data processing, oil and gas reservoir description, engineering geophysics and other related aspects. After more than 20 years, the institute have completed a number of collaborative research projects from the National Natural Science Foundation, international cooperation projects between China-US and China-England, the national "863" projects. The institute currently has a fleet of high-performance parallel computing composed of three SUN V880 servers and several workstations Ultra80 series, equipped with OYO thermal plotter, HP color plotter and digitizer, tape drives, and other advanced industrial input/output devices. It has been mainly responsible for the national "Tenth- Five" 863 project, developing "seismic data processing system based on the model (Model-Based Processing, referred MBP)" (MBP first version of the software system was registered in September 2004 at the National Copyright Protection Centre, see Introduction of MBP 1.0 software system).
