Department of Marine Geosciences

The Department of Marine Geosciences, previously called Department of Geology and Mineralogy of Shandong University in 1946, was established by the founder of the famous petrologist He Zuolin. Then it was renamed as Department of Marine Geology and Geomorphology in Shandong Ocean College in 1959, and Department of Marine Geology of Shandong College of Oceanography in 1963 after the department adjustment. When Ocean University of Qingdao was renamed and re-established College of Marine Geosciences in 1995, the Department of Marine Geosciences was established coevally. It has now Marine geology as one national key disciplines and one Shandong provincial key disciplines, it is also an important supporting disciplines under projects of "211" and "985".

Department of Marine Geosciences has 25 staffs, including one academician (Structural Geologist Guowei Zhang), 11 professors, 5 associate professors, 6 lecturers, 2 engineers as well as one 973 chief scientist, two NSFC Outstanding Youngest Scientists. The number of Ph. D. staffs is more than 19 people occupying 75% of total staff with a high- level of education, innovation and activation. The department has many renowned scholars, for example, Professor He Zuolin (Fellow), Professor Zhou Mingzhen (Fellow), Professor Zhang Shouchang, Professor Wang Qingchang, Professor Qiu Jie, Professor Bai Jimei, Professor Hao Yishou, Professor Zhang Baomin and so on.

The Department of Marine Geosciences offers undergraduate courses of geology (Marine Geology direction), three Ph.D. students subjects (Marine Geology, Marine Geochemistry, Energy and Environmental Engineering), one post-graduate first-level subject (geology) including eight second-level subjects (Marine Geology, Marine Geochemistry, Mineralogy, Petrology, Economic Geology, Geochemistry, Structural Geology, Paleontology and Stratigraphy, Quaternary Geology and Geological Engineering), and one postdoctoral program on Marine Geology. The department owns 11 classrooms for teaching of minerals, rocks, structural geology, paleontology, geochemistry, marine geology and others, respectively. It established the Taocun Geological Fieldtrip Training Base in Shandong Province for freshman students, and the Chaohu Geological Teaching and Survey Base of Anhui Province for junior student, the Marine Geology Comprehensive Practice Base in ShandongPeninsula and oceanographical cruise by "The Dongfanghong No. 2". It has many joint training programs on Marine Geology with the National Oceanology Beareau and the relevant units of major coastal provinces. The staffs offer more than 60 professional courses for undergraduate, postgraduate from subjects of Geology, Marine Geology.

Key Laboratory of Marine Geosciences and Exploration Techniques, MOE is a scientific platform of the Department of Marine Geosciences. In recent years, the department took the 973 and 863 projects of National Science and Technology, the National Natural Science Foundation of China and numerous other topics from local departments and governments. The research results won a number of national, provincial and ministerial awards. It published "Marine Geochemistry", "Marine Sedimentology", "Modern Marine Geology", "Marine Geology", "Quaternary Environmental Change", "Coastal Dynamic Geomorphology" and other distinctive ocean-related books.

Department of Marine Geosciences has trained and accumulated more than 1,500 undergraduates, more than 500 graduates, more than 150 Philothophy doctors. They are active in domestic and international marine, petroleum, mining, universities, research institutes and government departments. A large number of graduates became the experts having made outstanding contributions, some occupied important leadership positions, and some grow as academicians.
