RESEARCH

Research Interests:

1. Study on the fishing gears and development of ocean-friendly and effective fishing technology;

2. Selectivity of various fishing gears and its effect on the Eco-friendly fishing method;

3. Study on the technology of artificial fish reef engineering and its effect on the recovery and enrichment of fish resources;

Specific Research Directions:

1. The selectivity of fishing gears and development of Eco-friendly fishing gears and fishing methods. The selectivity of fishing gears is the capability of selective fishing on the target species and the size of its individuals. It is one of the research frontiers in the fishing technology internationally. Nonselective of fishing gears on the fishing species and the size of individuals is one of the most important reasons to cause the rapid decline of fishery resource. In order to protect the main fishery resources in the Bohai Sea and the Yellow Sea, the research of the fishing selectivity has been performed on the various fishing gears such as gill net, shrimp beam trawl, trap net and cage pot. Based on these researches, a new theoretical method was suggested to estimate the selectivity for gill nets. Several important parameters have been deduced, which are critical for the design of selective fishing gears used in the Bohai Sea and the Yellow Sea. For example, the minimum mesh size of trap net to capture trachypenaeus curvirostris should be 35mm; the separating bars of the shrimp beam trawl should be spaced at a distance of 19 mm with a mesh size of 40 mm for its separating nets; the diameter of outlet for eel cages should be 18 mm. New types of fishing gears with selectivity have been developed according to these parameters, which has a release rate for the economical juvenile fishes and untargeted species up to eighty percentages. Many of the research results have been adopted by the Ministry of Agriculture to make the regulation for the access of fishing gears in the Bohai and Yellow seas and provide a solid basis of policy decision for the government to constitute the administrative statutes of marine fishing gears. Moreover, they will play an important role in the protection, as well as the rational exploitation and utilization of fishery resources in the offshore area of the Bohai and Yellow seas.

2. Research on the technology of artificial fish reef engineering. Research on the key technology of artificial fish reef engineering has been one of the hot spots in the fishery engineering for the recent decade, which is part of the recovery projects of fishery resources along the coast of China. Aiming at the decay of fishery resources and ‘desertification’ of fishing ground in the offshore area of our country, the construction of artificial reef is one of the effective measures to improve the fish habitats and recover the fishery resources.  Research has been carried out about the following subjects such as hydrodynamic characteristics of individual artificial reef, the estimation of behavioral characteristics of the main species breeding around the artificial reefs and the evaluation of breeding effects. Five parameters have been screened out for the optimal design of reefs. Various types of artificial reefs have been designed, e.g. ship-type reefs, triangle reefs, caisson-type reefs and reefs for sheltering the species of rare sea-food, which have been found wide application in the construction of artificial reef engineering in Shandong, China.
