On November 27, the Chinese Academy of Engineering released its list of newly elected academicians. The list includes 67 Chinese and 18 foreign academicians. Two faculty members of OUC –Prof. Li Huajun, an ocean engineering expert, and Prof. Bao Zhenmin, an expert on the genetics and breeding of scallop – were elected to the academy. To date, OUC has a total of 12 academicians across the Chinese Academy of Science and the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Prof. Li Huajun, a renowned expert in ocean engineering, is dedicated to research into interaction of wave and structures, safety and disaster prevention of offshore engineering. For more than three decades, he led the team to develop theories and technology of coastal structures, including new models for offshore and shallow sea resources development that is safe, environmentally friendly and cost-efficient, work that has resulted in advancements in seashore structuring. Li has previously invented key technologies for the design and assembling of offshore platforms, which has contributed to the development of deep-sea engineering technologies. He also innovated inspection and repair technologies, thereby safeguarding the operation of offshore platforms, which has brought about significant social and economic benefits.

Li attaches great importance to the education of emerging talent and he has educated nearly 100 master’s and doctoral students, most of whom have become leading figures in the field of marine engineering. Several of his students are recipients of national awards granted by the National Science Fund for Outstanding Young Scholars, the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars, the Yangtze Scholar Program for Young Scholars (Ministry of Education) and the Shandong Taishan Scholar Program. The Research Institute of Seashore and Ocean Engineering, which he founded, has become a professional team with highly qualified innovative scholars of ocean engineering.

Prof. Bao Zhenmin, an eminent expert on the genetics and breeding of scallop, has been committed to theoretical research and technological innovation for nearly thirty years. Along with his team, he conducted a systematic assessment of China’s main scallop germplasm resources and he discovered the genetic evolution and adaptation mechanism, as well as completing many scallop genome mapping projects, making China a resource center of information on scallop genome. In addition, he laid a solid foundation for the development of new scallop germplasm and provided new ideas for interpreting complicated life phenomena in marine invertebrates.

He also developed BLUP, the first linear unbiased prediction assessment system for scallop genetics in the world, which has become one of the core technologies supporting China’s aquacultural development. He invented a wide range of low-cost genome genetic typing technologies, leading to breakthroughs in the high-throughput genome analysis of aquatic lives. In addition, he developed technologies for scallop marker-assisted breeding and genome selection, which has resulted in a new trend in the development of aquacultural breeding. He has also built an online platform for scallop breeding and bred five new types of scallop, including the Penglai Red Scallop and the Haida Gold Scallop which were approved by the government and have already been well received in the industry. Thanks to his efforts, scallop culture in China no longer relies on using wild fingerlings, which has vastly improved the maricultural breeding.

Prof. Li is involved in the Division of Civil, Hydraulic and Architectural Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Engineering while Prof. Bao is involved in the Division of Agriculture. To date, OUC has 5 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 7 of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
