Dong Fang Hong 3 being launched

On January 16, 2018, Ocean University of China’s (OUC) new deep-sea research vessel (H2623) was launched and named at Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai. The vessel is a work of craftsmanship and is of great significance to the development of China’s maritime strengths.

In attendance were Prof. Ju Chuanjin, Chairman of OUC’s university council and Prof. Yan Ju, Vice President of OUC, along with leaders from the Ministry of Education, the Jiangnan Shipyard Group, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the State Oceanic Administration, the Ministry of Finance, the China State Shipbuilding Corporation and the China Classification Society. Mr. Hu Keyi, chief designer at Jiangnan Shipyard, hosted the ceremony, which began at 11 o’clock to the powerful rhythm of the national anthem. President Lin Ou of the Jiangnan Shipyard Group and Chairman Ju Chuanjin delivered speeches on behalf of the shipbuilder and the commissioner respectively, expressing good wishes and keen expectations for the future of the vessel. Prof. Yan Ju officially announced the name of the vessel— Dong Fang Hong 3. After the bottle-breaking ceremony, the vessel was guided into the testing pool.

Chairman Ju Chuanjin extended thanks and respect to all the groups and government agencies for the efforts they have made in the building of the ship. He reviewed the history of the three generations of research vessels – Dong Fang Hong (built in the 1960s), Dong Fang Hong 2 (built in the 1990s) and Dong Fang Hong 3 (which was begun in 2013) – all of which were supported by the Ministry of Education. OUC worked closely with all parties involved to implement this significant shipbuilding project, which integrated multiple disciplines, technologies and engineering applications. Dong Fang Hong 3 showcases China’s state-of-the-art shipbuilding technique and creates a strategic platform that facilitates the country’s rapid development of maritime strengths. He pointed out that OUC, as the only comprehensive university with primary strengths in marine-related fields, would continue to explore the oceans for the benefit of the country and step up its effort to become a world-class university.
